Seventh day

When we woke up, we all had a mix of sensations in the body,
because we knew that it was going to be our last day with the Luos and
that the next day we would return to the capital to take a flight and go home.
This was going to be the last day of our adventure.

We had breakfast with the Luo, while the oldest people of the tribe told us stories
that our guide was translating to us.
When they were young it was a tradition to remove six of the lower teeth to indicate
that children became men.
Fortunately that habit disappeared a lot of years ago.
The morning passed quickly as we listened to the stories and learned more about them, until,
in the afternoon, after eating, we were invited to go fishing with them.

It was a pretty fun and interesting experience and in the end, with a lot of effort,
we were able to catch one fish each.

At nightfall, we ate kuon, which is a kind of white pasta made of cornmeal and accompanied by fish.
It was very good.
The night passed quietly and we went to bed early,
because the next day we would begin our journey back.

Sixth Day

After to be enjoying with the Kikuyu tribe, we decided to go to Victoria lake.
The lake´s area is divided among three countries; Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

When we arrived there, we decided to have breakfast next to the lake while we are waiting the local guide. He was going to show us the village and different things about luo tribe.
The first vision is of women selling fish on the shore. They explain to us that most men drink a lot and smoke marijuana, so they fish and the children take care of each other.
The Luo Tribe is one of thefew tribes who don't do circumcision in Africa.
Talking about their culture, the guide told us that Obama´s father belonged to this tribe.

Now is moment of having dinner fish what they usually eat. While we are having dinner we tell them that we were with the kikuyu tribe two days ago, what causes one minute of tension due to the fact that kikuyu and luo tribes were at war for many years.
After this uncomfortable moment, they explain to us that kikuyu tribe killed many of their relatives. Although, they have already established peace between tribes.

Finally, we go to sleep after a very intense day where we have continued learning.

Fourth Day

So, after the great experience that we had with the masais our expectations were very high with the Kikuyu. They are the biggest ethnic group in Kenya, even their president is one of them!
We followed …….. through the rift valley. The scenery was really amazing. I hate to admit it, but I was pretty scared that some wild animal would show up and we’d have an accident, but fortunately nothing happened. I have always wondered how those tribes avoid the animals, so I asked the boys and we tried to guess.
When we arrived we saw a large fence made with hawthorn branch, surprisingly Cristobal was right so, point for you :)
If you think about it it has a lot of sense because animals get hurt with the spines so they go away. The view was very interesting. There were quite a few huts, made of dung and chaff, placed randomly on the ground (no, it doesn’t smell that bad). The women were spread around them doing different tasks while the children ran half naked in some kind of game. The most important men in the tribe were waiting for us.

We were received by the spokesman of the group, he said that we were welcome and he showed us the shack in which we were going to spend the night. We noticed that all the doors were pointing in the same direction, towards Mount Kenya. This is because they believe that their god Ngay lives on this mountain. They still go up from time to time to celebrate sacrifices when there are problems.

He also told us that later, when it got dark, they were going to have a kind of party, where we would have meat for dinner and they would show us some of their typical dances, which we thought was a good idea.

And it was, the meet was made in some kind of barbeque and it was delicious, but i’m not sure about what kind of meet it was, i hope it was goat. After the dinner they show us some of their typical songs, surprisingly, they were very beautiful, we tried to understand something but it was impossible .

They told us that maybe tomorrow they can show us some typical dances, i´m very excited for it. So now, we are going to sleep, and lets see what happens tomorrow.

Second Day

We wake up energetic knowing that today starts our experience with Masais tribe.
So, after leaving  the hostel we move to the bus station, where we have an appointment with Loresen.
Loresen is the guy who is going to take us to the Masais village, he belongs to the Masais.
He receives us with a cell phone and a gps, it seems that he has changed it for the spears.

Our trip lasts around six hours by car, but our Masai guide makes it shorter tellings us stories about the Masais. For example, They live through the rift valley, The Masais are nomads and  they have been called lion warriors  for a long time due to their battle for the cattle.

Once we arrive to the Masai Mara, Loresen introduces us to his family with five sons and four daughters. It cannot be forgotten that the Maasai culture is polygamous, therefore Loresen has four wives.
While his wives are preparing a tea  we are fascinated looking at around us the different houses where we are going to sleep, named “bomas”.
Suddenly, Mallie brings our tea and Loresen welcomes us toasting for nature and for us to feel free with them.

The sky is getting dark, so it is time to prepare the dinner. Most of Maasais are cattle rancher, although things are changing  to keep surviving in peace with nature and lions.
They take us to their cattle where they chose one piece for dinner.

After have dinner with all of them, we repose our food enjoying the famous Maasai dance. It is a kind of dance  where they jump in circle, it is really funny.
Lucia and Juanra recorded it.

Finally, Loresen told us that we needed to sleep due to the fact that tomorrow we would go with him to see what is his new job. Surprise!!!

Travel to Kenya

First day in Kenya

Nature, wildlife, cultural shock, madness on the streets of Nairobi and the most desired by us,
to know about different tribes in Kenya. These were some of the thoughts that we had before to start this adventure.

While Juanra and me were smoking a cigarette in front of the taxi stand,
Lucia decided to start to exchanging some words with the taxi drivers to bargain the price of our trip to the center of Nairobi.

Once we arrived to our hostel, called Rainbow Downtown Hostel, we leave our backpacks at the hostel and we started to walk around the city.
It cannot be denied that we were so tired but we still wanted to discover what we could, since we did not have long time in the capital.

Firstly, we were in the National Park of Nairobi where we had our first contact with animals.
For our surprise there is a park in the center of a big capital  and you could visit it by taxi(first madness).
We were  talking to each other about how was possible that the animals could live in the downtown of a city.
Maybe it is normal and this is part of our ignorance.

Secondly, we found a young guy next to the exit door of the National Park.
He looked like that  he was waiting tourists to do a free tour around the city.
Then, Juanra started convincing us that we should.
Lucia and me are the type of people that when Juanra is becoming intense  we decide to keep doing what he wants jajajaja friendship.
Thus, we started the free tour with Nima, the young guy who wants to show us the best places of Nairobi.
The experience was worth it, Juanra was right.
He was telling us stories about how to survive on the streets, visit a hidden market where we tried the famous samosas of Kenya and
he also told us different tricks to contact with Masais tribe.

Finally, our first day finished with a dinner at  the Carnivore Restaurant close to our hostel.
In this restaurant we tasted all type of animals meat. At the beginning we were a little bit scared due to the fact that none of us had tried this before.

It is time to sleep and charge energy for the following days.

Words that we learned in suajili language:
